Not that its a particularly noisy drive, but I live in a very quiet neibourhood and like to watch the occasional movie at low volume after the kid is in bed. networked to another PC in my study, so I thought the logical thing to do would be to put the disk in the my study machine for playback in my loungeroom.

It is with the video playback quality that most users are concerned with. The question is: Does this £300 unit provide reasonable quality DVD playback and a decent Strangely on DTS tracks we found the volume to be slightly lower when played through PS2. If anyone has experienced the same please let us know.

DVD disks play at a comparatively lower volume. Sometimes it is diffifult to make out softly spoken audio!

One more question about DVD-ROM drives.

I said that DTS didn't crank up the volume, while Dolby cranks it down. That is 100% correct. No, it's not. Dolby does no encoding, they sell the encoder, DTS does the encoding and have often times done it wrong. .... My DVD playback system is totally digital and I have only a DD decoder. Can we say "joke"? :)

The volume control in the player controls the WAV OUT level, while the Volume Control in Windows controls the General volume control (WAV and MIDI and CD etc). Of course you should have both the WAV OUT level and the Volume COntrol level as high as possible to get the maximum output from DVD playback.

XTBox DVD playback is an Option
DVD's audio plays back at a lower volume to ensure a good pure sound. It basically keeps the quality at maximum. Does it ? I'm fairly new to this group (a couple of weeks) but I've never heard that one before. As I mentioned in a earlier follow up, both my mates and Mines machine have low volume DVD playback.

I have read that the data internal to the card is converted to 48 KHz for internal processing like volume control, so if you have sound at 44.1 it will convert it to 48 This may be Ok for DVD playback as it is already 48 , but the sound card is not just passing the digital data through to the digital outputs,
